Ronald was living out of his car and in recovery from addiction when he learned about a program at the Mather Community Campus that connects low-income clients to job training, life skills and other services.
Paid for by federal Community Service Block Grants administered by SETA, the program “provided everything someone would need to move on with their life,” says Ronald.
Enrolling in the program marked the first time in more than a year that Ronald could enjoy the stability and safety of a bona fide home. “My studio apartment was furnished and I had a shower, which I loved. You can’t imagine how good a shower feels after living on the streets,” he says. In addition to housing, Ronald had access to classes and a supportive caseworker who championed his self-sufficiency.
“As long as I knew what I wanted to do, she would back me,” says Ronald. “She made me feel so comfortable. She is a busy lady, but she always made time to talk to me. She knew my journey and she was right there by me. She always wanted to give me more. It was a beautiful thing. Once she helped me stand up, I was ready.”
Ronald, who had worked for years as a caregiver before falling on hard times, received accelerated training as a certified nursing assistant, later landing a job at an acute care hospital.
Steady employment enabled him to move to his own apartment, which added to his sense of personal accomplishment.
“My confidence level right now is awesome. I know I can do anything now,” says Ronald. “The program offers everything; every resource you need to succeed is there. All you have to do is do it. We all fall. I just needed help getting up.” ●

Utilized Community Services Block Grant employment assistance administered by SETA
SETA is the designated community action agency of Sacramento County to administer Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) assistance.
The purpose of the CSBG program is to reduce the incidence and effects of poverty and empower low-income families and individuals to become self-sufficient. The program operates through neighborhood-based organizations that provide resources and services to produce measurable impacts on the causes and symptoms of poverty experienced by challenged families and communities.
CSBG provides a range of services to assist low-income people in attaining the skills, knowledge, and motivation necessary to achieve self-sufficiency. The program also provides low-income people with immediate life necessities such as emergency food, shelter, transportation, and access to available community resources.
