SUBSIDIZED HOUSINGThe subsidized housing is at capacity and waiting lists are often full. Some programs may not be accepting new applications or names for the waiting lists. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) offers independent living apartments to low income senior citizens, people with disabilities, and families. The federal government subsidizes these units which means that the rent is usually based on approximately 30% of a person's adjusted monthly income. To apply for these units you need to contact each apartment complex directly and have your name placed on a waiting list. For a complete list of HUD subsidized developments, call: Infoline 498-1000 TDD 446-1434
Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency (SHRA)
Offers subsidized housing to low income seniors, people with disabilities, and families through the Conventional Housing Program and various Section 8 programs: Conventional Housing is SHRA owned apartments and single-family homes. Rent is approximately 30% of a person's gross monthly income. There are also various Section 8 programs where renters lease privately owned housing in Sacramento City or County. The renters pay the property owner approximately 30% of their adjusted monthly income toward rent while SHRA pays the difference.
