Human trafficking is modern-day slavery, in which victims are subjected to force, fraud or coercion for the purpose of forced labor or sexual exploitation. It is the fastest growing criminal industry worldwide.

Types of Human Trafficking

  • Forced labor or involuntary servitude;
  • Bonded labor or debt bondage;
  • Involuntary domestic servitude;
  • Forced child labor includes involuntary servitude, debt; bondage, or slavery;
  • Sex trafficking occur alongside debt bondage;
  • Child sexual exploitation including commercial sexual exploitation.

Indicators of a Potential Trafficking Victim

  • Evidence of being controlled or the inability to move or leave a job;
  • bruises or other signs of physical abuse;
  • fear or depression;
  • not speaking on own behalf and/or non-English speaking; and
  • no passport or other forms of identification or documentation.

Rescue & Restore Program Purpose

In May 2009, the United States Health & Human Services, Office of Refugee Resettlement awarded a cooperative agreement to SETA to implement a regional anti-trafficking program.  SETA operates this program in collaboration with local organizations, Opening Doors, Inc., My Sister’s House and WEAVE.  The purpose of the program is to:

  • Create public awareness of human trafficking
  • Create public awareness about how to identify a human trafficking victim
  • Provide emergency services to human trafficking victims
  • Promote the use of the anonymous hotline for victim services

Opening Doors Inc. provides comprehensive short- and long-term case services for human trafficking victims and conducts community awareness activities. My Sister’s House conducts outreach and assists in providing culturally appropriate services to Asian/Pacific Islander victims. WEAVE provides 24 hour emergency response to victims, assisting law enforcement, service providers and the community.
